THE ACTION
Joshua 10:8, 12 NLT
“Do not be afraid of them,” the Lord said to Joshua, “for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you.”
On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said,
“Let the sun stand still over Gibeon,
and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.”
THE REACTION
Joshua 10:13-14 NLT
So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies.
Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the Lord answered such a prayer. Surely the Lord fought for Israel that day!
Observation (s):
- Before the battle, God gave the Israelites the victory over their Amorite enemies.
“Do not be afraid of them,” the Lord said to Joshua, “for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you.”
- Joshua’s request for the sun to stand still aligned with God’s plans to give his people the victory.
On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said,

and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.”
Application:
I like pendulum clocks, especially the elaborate cuckoo clocks that is designed so that a bird pops out and sings on the hour. However, in order for the clock’s time to be accurate and the bird to pop out and sing, all the levers, gears, springs and pendulum, within the clock, have to be aligned and committed to the “accurate-time-telling-bird-singing” mission. Similarly, unfathomable feats occur when our intentions aligns with God’s plans.
Joshua’s battle and intentions to wipe out the Amorites aligned perfectly with God’s vision to give him the victory over his enemies. Due to this, in the midst of the battle, when a committed Joshua cried out for God’s divine intervention, an unfathomable thing happened. The sun stood still and prevented the night from coming!
