3 Ways God Fights for You Against You

No weapon formed against me shall prosper

Have you ever stopped to wonder “what does God fighting for me means?” Personally, I’ve never given it much thought beyond the general “no weapon that formed against me shall prosper” where the weapon tends to be an external force or enemy.

I opened the YouVersion Bible app recently and came across the Welcome in the story of the day:

As I read the sentence “He is always fighting for you.” a continuation dropped in my spirit “…even if He is fighting for you against you….”

Mic drop! Room silent! I stopped flabbergasted. He was right. There are a lot of times when our Father, who knows the plans that He has for us and wants what is best for us has to fight for us against us. We become the weapons that have formed against ourselves that God has declared shall not prosper. Don’t believe me, let’s look at a couple examples when we become the enemy that God has to fight against to save our future.

#1: God fights for us against us when…we foster our insecurities about “our impediments”

My impediment is that sometimes I struggle with believing that I am good at my job, despite persons telling me otherwise. Oftentimes I feel like a fraud whom someone will out at any moment. This feeling often makes me shy away from applying for stretch roles. In many ways, I can relate to Moses who highlights his insecurity about his speech impediment when God sends him to Egypt as His ambassador.

When our insecurities due to our “impediments” take front and center, the manner is which God fights for us is simple. He reminds us who made us as seen in His response to Moses: “Who made your mouth?” Sometimes when we still don’t believe, He may also humor us by sending us a companion/aide who lends us false confidence.

I am still learning the incredible rule that Moses learned “God does not send you on a journey or put you in a place you where He hasn’t equipped you or means to provide/equip for you.” You just have to move in faith. God, your Creator, made you and equipped you for wherever your purpose dictates you will be.

#2:God fights for us against us when…our disobedience affects our purpose.

Years ago I was with someone whom, by all intents and purposes, was not God’s plan for my life. Rather than giving him up, I kept digging myself in deeper, ignoring the voice of God. Eventually God said enough was enough and the consequences came and things fell apart.

There are many cases in the bible when Israel’s disobedience of God’s word cause them to stray from their purpose. Despite God’s warnings and pleas to His treasured people, they continued along the way that led to destruction. Eventually, the time for consequences come when God fights against them.

The amazing thing is that though He lifts His protection off His treasured people and allows their enemies to destroy them so that their hearts can come to a place where they are open to hearing from Him and obeying. Only then can He restore them. In essence, because of my disobedience, I got my heart broken so that God could restore me.

#3:God fights for us against us when…our shame or pride causes us to push Him away.

I’ve slipped up many times during 2020. Whether my slip-ups were intentional or not, the results often remained the same. I would feel a sense of conviction followed by shame that I had failed God. Like Adam and Eve, I felt naked and unsure of how to face God, being the screw-up I am. In those moments my natural reaction was to let my shame push me away from Him. However, He always fights for me. He is there persistently knocking at my heart’s door…and I can tell you, the moments I let Him win are some of the most freeing, tears and all.

Hi, I`m Chañel. I used to be a people-pleaser who gave 200% because of my love for people. As a result, I almost lost my mind and my life. Today, my goal is to make sure people stop putting themselves last. And, if possible, never experience what I went through!
