What Do You Need?

One of my most favorite Bible scriptures (St. Luke 18:35-43) tells the story of the blind man who learnt that Jesus was passing by.

His blindness didn’t stop him because this man had a need and whilst he was somewhat hindered, he opened his mouth and cried out to Jesus for mercy. I find this act interesting because I can just imagine how packed the crowd was! After all, the amount of people who followed Jesus could be compared to the number of fleas and ticks on wild dogs. Can you just imagine the level of noise he would have to make to be heard?!

Yet he was heard by the people who tried to hush him. This only caused him to cry with more vigour. Eventually, he got Jesus’ attention. Before he knew it, he was brought before Jesus! All because of his persistence, he now had an audience with the king!

Totally amazing!

But wait his story doesn’t end there! Remember he still had a need which you would believe would be obvious to all. But here comes the intriguing part. Instead of just granting him, his obvious need, my amazing omniscient God asks him, “What will thou that I shall do unto thee?” I found this very strange. I mean Jesus was not blind, He surely had noted the blind man’s issue.

It is quite curious the way the man didn’t bluster and get red in the face the way many of us would have, if faced with such a seemingly silly question. He says quite simply, “Lord that I may receive my sight.” Reading this moment took me right back to Jesus’ remarks earlier up in St. Luke 11:9-10:

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

His level of faith in God was tried outright before a crowd! He was forced to ask and because he believe and was willing to demonstrate his belief, he was IMMEDIATELY handsomely rewarded. The interaction ends with Jesus simply declaring, “Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.”

I think we all can take a page from this blind man’s book. What do you need? What do you need Jesus to do for you? Are you willing to cry out despite the hindrances? Are you willing to demonstrate your faith in God? Then I urge you to stay your course because surely your faith shall save you and you will receive what you have petitioned the King for.
