Standout Verse(s):
THE ACTION
Judges 7:9-11 NLT
That night the Lord said, “Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them! But if you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah. Listen to what the Midianites are saying, and you will be greatly encouraged. Then you will be eager to attack.”
THE REACTION
Judges 7:13-15 NLT
Gideon crept up just as a man was telling his companion about a dream. The man said, “I had this dream, and in my dream a loaf of barley bread came tumbling down into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent, turned it over, and knocked it flat!”
His companion answered, “Your dream can mean only one thing—God has given Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite, victory over Midian and all its allies!”
When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship before the Lord. Then he returned to the Israelite camp and shouted, “Get up! For the Lord has given you victory over the Midianite hordes!”
Observation (s):
- God knew of Gideon’s fears and prepared assurances in advance.
That night the Lord said, “Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them! But if you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah. Listen to what the Midianites are saying, and you will be greatly encouraged. Then you will be eager to attack.”
- Members of the Midianite camp were aware that Gideon would win, before he was.

- God’s assurances were all that Gideon needed to believe, thank God for the victory and be propelled into action.
When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship before the Lord. Then he returned to the Israelite camp and shouted, “Get up! For the Lord has given you victory over the Midianite hordes!”
Application:
God’s proactive response to Gideon’s fear is so reassuring. His understanding of Gideon was so in-depth that He prepared external reassurances, for Gideon, before Gideon even realized he needed them. Can you imagine that? God accomplished so much with one dream:
- God sent a Midianite man, the enemy, a dream and its interpretation ahead of schedule.
- God knew when and where the conversation regarding the dream would occur and positioned Gideon to be at the right place to receive what He needed.
- The enemy believed that Gideon would win before Gideon believed what God had assured him of.
Through one move, God was able to strike out Gideon’s fear and strike fear in the enemy. That’s a masterful divine orchestration!
